Top Gourmet Burgers in NZ

There’s something kind of funny about how unpredictable New Zealand’s burger scene has gotten. A few years ago, you’d have safely bet on the famous names — the Queenstown queues, the big-city chains — taking out any national title going. Lately, though, the country keeps proving that the best burger in Aotearoa might just as easily be coming out of a food truck in a town most Kiwis couldn’t point to on a map. Here’s where to actually go, ranked.

Top-Ranked & Award Winners

This is the bit that’s genuinely surprised people two years running.

1. Peake’s Kitchen — Papatowai, The Catlins

If you haven’t heard this story yet, it’s worth knowing. Peake’s Kitchen is a husband-and-wife-run food truck in the tiny Catlins town of Papatowai, and they basically cleaned up. They took the Supreme Winner of Burger Nation 2025, beating the big-city entries from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch in the process. Not a “almost” situation either— their hand-ground Hereford steak patty, house-made relish, and pinot noir pickled beetroot build took more votes than anything that was served in the major cities. That came from over 100,000 burgers eaten nationwide during the competition. So if you’re ever driving the Catlins coast, this is a legit reason to plan the whole route around it rather than treating it like a quick detour stop.

2. Smashie’s — Pukekohe, Auckland

Smashie’s took the Supreme Winner title at Burger Nation 2026, seeing off, more than 300 other competitors in a competition that pulled in over 7,000 public votes. Their winning burger, the Classic Smashie Double, doesn’t really try to be clever about it, it’s just two quarter-pound beef patties smashed crispy on the grill, American cheese, their secret sauce, and McClure’s pickles tucked into a fresh brioche bun. And honestly, sometimes the simple well-executed version just wins, you know.

3. One80 Restaurant & Lounge Bar — Mount Victoria, Wellington

For something a bit more dressed up, One80 has been a regular finalist in the Burger Wellington awards, including their 2024 entry, the “Nawabi Galouti,” served on a croissant bun instead of a regular bun. This isn’t really a quick-bite kind of place — it’s more of a sit-down, order-a-wine-with-it situation, and the price reflects that.

Must-Try Gourmet Spots

Beyond the trophies, these are the names that keep coming up when people talk about burgers worth specifically going out of your way for.

4. Fergburger — Queenstown

You’ve probably already heard of this one, and there’s a reason it’s stayed the most talked-about burger in the country for years. Big, made with New Zealand prime beef, and basically a rite of passage if you’re in Queenstown — queue and all.

5. Black Burger — Christchurch

If you want something a bit more indulgent, Black Burger does premium grain-fed Japanese Black Wagyu smash burgers. It’s the kind of place where you’re paying a bit more, but the quality of the beef genuinely shows.

6. Burger Station — Riccarton, Christchurch

Burger Station is known locally for being honest about its ingredients and just generally good, warm Kiwi hospitality — nothing flashy, just consistently solid. What sets it apart a bit is the menu’s range: alongside the usual builds, there’s a proper Indian-fusion lineup, which isn’t something you see much of on a typical Kiwi burger menu.

7. Lucky G’s — Auckland

Their “Lil G” smash burger has built a real following, with plenty of reviewers saying it beats out the bigger chains outright. Auckland’s smash burger game is crowded these days, but this one keeps coming up first in conversation.

8. Burger Liquor — Te Aro, Wellington

A solid all-rounder in the capital — well-balanced beef, but also genuinely good vegan options, which makes it an easy pick if you’re heading out with a mixed group. Pairs nicely with a craft beer too, if that’s your thing.

9. The Bearded Clam — Grey Lynn, Auckland

Doesn’t show up on the big rating sites the same way the others do, but the people who’ve been keep calling it “epic” — more of a destination for someone who already takes their burgers seriously than a casual drop-in.

10. BurgerFuel — Nationwide

Not the most exciting pick on this list, but reliable in a way that matters. If you’re travelling and want a guaranteed decent burger wherever you land, this is the safe bet — their aioli alone has built a small cult following.

Local Favourites to Watch

A few names that haven’t quite hit the national spotlight yet, but probably will soon.

11. Kanes Burger Club — Auckland

Their “Aucklahoma” has become a bit of a cult regional smash burger, and it’s priced well too — a strong value pick if you’re not trying to spend big.

12. RE Burger — Dunedin

Getting a name for itself down south for genuinely good char and properly loaded fries — proof the South Island has more going on than just the Catlins headline-grabber.

13. Parade — Ponsonby, Auckland

Been picking up attention from Auckland food critics lately. Not a household name yet, but worth keeping on your radar.

Finding Your Perfect NZ Burger

Honestly, it depends on what you’re chasing. Want the story and the title? Go to Peake’s Kitchen or Smashie’s. Want the iconic, say-you ‘ve-done-it experience? Fergburger’s still the obvious call. Looking for something a bit more refined? One80 or Black Burger will get you there.

And if you’re in Auckland specifically, it’s worth checking the latest city rankings too — the scene there moves fast enough that new names pop up most years.

And If You’re in Christchurch: Burger Station

No ranked list of NZ burgers is really complete without a mention of Burger Station in Riccarton, Christchurch — and it deserves a closer look rather than just a line in a list. What makes it stand out isn’t any single award or trophy, it’s the range. While most spots on this list are known for doing one thing really well, Burger Station has built a genuinely global menu, with a full Indian-fusion lineup running alongside the classics — think butter chicken-style builds and curry-spiced patties you just won’t find anywhere else on this list.

It’s also earned a strong local reputation for being upfront about its ingredients and for the kind of warm, unpretentious hospitality that keeps people coming back rather than treating it as a one-off. With two locations — Riccarton and Lincoln — it’s an easy stop whether you’re a student, a local, or just passing through Canterbury and want something a bit different from the usual beef-and-cheese formula.

If you’re working your way through this list city by city, Burger Station is worth treating as more than a footnote — particularly if you want a burger experience that doesn’t taste like everything else on this page.
